The bicycle can no longer be regarded simply as a means of transportation or sport. The revolution of cycling has reached several major European cities: the two-wheeler has become the instrument and symbol of a livable urban environment, social mobility, and sustainable economy. More and more people choose the bike as a clean and cost-efficient transportation alternative, as a lifestyle, or as a means of identity construction and community building.

In response to this, contemporary design creates objects en masse, connecting and supporting urban cycling.
The exhibition Bikeology illustrates the role and importance of design in urban cycling through a triple section of the individual, the local communities, and the global challenges.
How can design inspire safe, comfortable, and stylish cycling? What is the role of the designer in the bicycle-centered development of urban systems? How can design and biking influence global social, environmental and economic processes? The exhibition Bringology brings us the latest design innovations from more than ten countries. The exhibition pushes the boundaries of the interpretation of design as a discipline and a profession: in addition to new formal developments, visitors may learn about concepts shaping the system, social projects, and innovative technologies. The historical context and the significance of the exhibition are highlighted by some exceptional and accentuated pieces from the collection of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.

Chain links

How can we find our place in the cycling culture? How can we connect with others – like chain links - who have already been involved in this experience, affecting the whole society and improving the quality of life? How can more people hop on bikes? The solution is partly in the hands of designers who create innovative objects for individual cycling.

Tandem

Sándor Szabó: Cargo bike

Our attention is focused on the relation of cities and cycling. A tandem ride can only be successful in cooperation. The key of functioning urban communities is also collaboration, participation, and communication. This section of the exhibition presents important urbanistic projects and talks about the exciting role of the bike in businesses and the local economy.

Critical Mass

A system works efficiently when the number of users reaches a critical mass. What is the role of the critical mass in the relationship of the bicycle and the design; and in the development of sustainable systems from social, economic, and ecological aspects, resulting in real and global change?
