Collec_ Think Tank with Poland. Conference on the possibilities of representing Polish design in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest

A38 ship, 14–15 February 2019

The Contemporary Design Collection of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts was founded in May 2015. Its foundation did not simply aim at creating a new collection but also at cooperation based on experience and common interests. During the following years the main building of the Museum of Applied Arts will be closed due to reconstruction works. Our goal is to create a collection representing different branches of 20th- and 21st-century design and crafts by the time the museum building is re-opened, focusing primarily on the region of the former Socialist countries. It is our task to complete our collection with the characteristic design items of the socialist countries of Eastern Europe before the change of the political system, as there are hardly any of them in our collection for the time being.

The Contemporary Design Department intends to maintain a close relationship with other Central European museums and cultural institutes, among others with the Polish Adam Mickiewicz Institute. Thanks to this cooperation, in autumn 2018, in the framework of POLAND 100 – an international cultural programme commemorating the regaining of Polish independence – a contemporary bench, designed by the Polish artist Pawel Grobelny, was donated to the Design Collection of the Museum of Applied Arts by the Stalowa Wola Regional Museum. In 2019 a Polish designer, Maria Jeglinska, was requested to be the exhibitor of the second part of the exhibition series In Circulation.

Besides the exhibition series we initiated a conference series as well, entitled Collec_Think Tank. The first conference is taking place on 14 and 15 February 2019 in Budapest. The invited speakers of the conference are design theorists and experts from the countries of the former Socialist region, who are giving lectures on the possibilities of representing design in their countries. The first conference of the series focuses on presenting Polish design from World War II to the time being in the collection of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts. The conference offers a great opportunity to support the collection’s medium- and long-term strategy with respect to the collection and representation of Polish design in a Hungarian Museum. The speakers are Polish professionals who, together with the team of Contemporary Design Department, are considering the possibilities of researching, collecting and exhibiting Polish design in Hungary. The invited speakers of the conference are curators, collectors, academic professors and researchers from the countries of the former Socialist region, who, together with the team of Contemporary Design Department, are considering the possibilities of researching, collecting and exhibiting Polish design in Hungary.

The proceedings of the conference will be published in English digitally.
The conference and the volume are supported by the Wacław Felczak Foundation.
