A kiss under the mistletoe pendant lamp...

The mistletoe pendant lamp of the British room was designed and manufactured by Gyula Jungfer at the end of the 19th century. He was a well renowned metalworker throughout Europe at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The lamp is decorated with multiple motifs: bird’s foot holding a twig, oak leaf and acorn. The small twigs are decorated with mistletoe bunches.
Mistletoe is a symbol of Christmas, of forgiveness, love, vivacity and fertility. According to Anglo-Saxon traditions, couples who stand under the mistletoe and exchange a kiss will be lovers for life.

Perfume at the turn of the century

Perfume was a real luxurious item in Europe throughout the centuries. In 1889, however, synthetically created modern perfume was born – with synthetic components such as vanillin and coumarin. Later floral fragrances became dominant: rose, lilac, lily of the valley, jasmine and viola. Although perfume had become cheaper, more affordable and accessible, it still was not an everyday item but a little bit of festive luxury for the middle class.

Back in those good old days also perfume packaging and bottles were designed with great care. Perfume bottles designed by René Lalique are among the most prestigious pieces in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts. The French Guerlain Perfume was already in use at the turn of the century. Its one-time design and that of our days are very much akin.
