Exhibition Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest, From Japonisme to Art Nouveau – European crafts that dreamed of Japan, Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art, Fukushima city, Japan

In the late 19th century, the influx of Japanese artifacts into Europe led to Japonisme, which is the influence of Japanse art on Western crafts and designs. The influence was evident in the Art Nouveau style, which was dominating Western countries at the time. While Japonism has become the fashion style, art museums in European countries have also collected Japanese lacquer crafts and ceramics. The Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest has been actively collecting Japanese art since its opening in 1872. This exhibition traces the history of how Japanese art influenced the West. Under the theme of Japonisme and Art Nouveau, there are about 200 items from the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, including Tiffany, Galle, Daum Brothers and Lalique, as well as works representing Hungary.
