Restoring Art Nouveau
Architectural Decoration in the Danube Region

The present volume is the result of special transnational cooperation.
The “Interreg. Danube Transnational Programme” cooperation framework created through European Union support launched a project in 2017 that introduces the collective Art Nouveau architectural heritage of the Danube River region. The volume contains the lectures of an international conference and workshop held on the 6th and 7th of November, 2017 in Budapest. There, the representatives of the participating institutions brought to light the parallel histories and lessons to be learned from the restorationof these buildings with common artistic roots through case studies brought from their own countries.

Ödön Lechner in Context

Studies of the international conference on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Ödön Lechner’s death. The Museum of Applied Arts is housed in a magnificent building, the masterwork of architect Ödön Lechner (1845-1914). This great building defines and identifies the institution, and it sometimes better known than the collection it houses. In fact, the building is often described as the first key object in the collection of the museum.

Now, in 2018, the villa is opening again with a permanent exhibition called Art Nouveau - a Hungarian Pesrspective. As is clearly expressed in the title, the exhibition puts over our own Hungarian situatuin and point of view, but is is also very much 'our own' in conveying the present state if affairs of the Museum of Applied Arts.

Körforgásban — In circulation: Maria Jeglińska

Az Iparművészeti Múzeum Ráth György-villájában 2018-ban indítottuk útjára a Körforgásban című időszaki kiállítássorozatot, melynek legfőbb célja mozgásban tartani és gyarapítani gyűjteményünket. Harmadik meghívottunk Fazekas Valéria kalap dizájner, aki két díszedényt választott ki a gyűjteményből, melyek több tucat kalap elkészítésére inspirálták. A sorozat második kiállítója Maria Jeglińska lengyel dizájner, aki egy 1969-ben Mikó Sándor által tervezett karosszéket választott inspirációs forrásként.

We launched the series of seasonal exhibitions entitled In Circulation in the Hungarian Museum of Applied Arts’ György Ráth Villa in 2018, with the primary aim of keeping our collections in motion and further developing them. Milliner Valéria Fazekas selected two vases from the museum’s collection: one produced in the Zsolnay Factory and one from the Drasche Factory, designing several hat collections upon their inspiration. The second exhibitor of the series is Polish designer, Maria Jeglińska.

Collec_ Think Tank with Poland

The Contemporary Design Collection's foundation did not simply aim at creating a new collection but also at cooperation based on experience and common interests. During the following years the main building of the Museum of Applied Arts will be closed due to reconstruction works. Our goal is to create a collection representing different branches of 20th- and 21st-century design and crafts by the time the museum building is re-opened, focusing primarily on the region of the former Socialist countries. It is our task to complete our collection with the characteristic design items of the socialist countries of Eastern Europe before the change of the political system.

Az Esterházy kincstár textíliái az Iparművészeti Múzeum gyűjteményében
(Thesaurus Domus Esterhazyanae II.) / Textiles from the Eszterhazy Treasury

E jelzők kétségkívül helytállóak, több vonatkozásban is. A katalógus a Nemzeti Kulturális Alap támogatásával jelent meg.

"Outstanding, unparalleled, unique," such are the epithets bestowed by experts and public alike on the Esterházy treasury. And there are several specific senses in which they are well deserved. First of all, the collection stands apart from most Central European aristocratic treasuries of the early modern age in the diversity of its holdings.

Beatrix hozománya / The Dowry of Beatrice

A 2008-as évet, Mátyás király trónra lépésének 550. évfordulóját a kulturális kormányzat a "Magyar reneszánsz évének" nyilvánította.

The year 2008 marks the 550th anniversary of ascent to the throne of the great humanist king of Hungary, Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490) and has been proclaimed the "Year of Hungarian Renaissance". The Museum of Applied Arts decided to present the art of Italian maiolica to the public at this occasion.

Habán mítosz 1593-1738 / Haban myth 1593-1738

A katalógus a "Habán mítosz - Magyar magángyűjtemények kincsei" kiállítás(2007.05.21- 11.25) vezetője. A habánok 16. -18. századi Erdély területén élő zárt vallási közössége messze földön híres volt fazekasságáról, fajanszárujáról. Ezek a minőségükben és kivitelezésükben is egyedülálló alkotások nem véletlenül állnak a hazai magángyűjtés homlokterében.

At ceramic auctions in Hungary no other objects are followed with greater attention and interest than the Haban pieces. For the amateur public the name "Haban" represents a mysterious and prestigious object. At these auctions however, pieces of inferior quality and of dubious origin are also to be found.

Perzsa művészet a Qádzsár-korban (1796-1925)" című kiállítás katalógusa a 19. századi perzsa művészet lehető legszélesebb körű bemutatását tűzte ki céljául, tanulmányai és képanyaga kiváló szerzők tollából származó, alig ismert vagy egészen új tudományos eredményeket tárnak az érdeklődők elé.

The result of many years and efforts, this catalogue is intended to put together most of what Hungarian collections have preserved of the arts of Qajar Persia.

A szecesszió mesterei az Iparművészeti Múzeumban / Masters of Art Nouveau in the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts

2013 tavaszán az olaszországi magyar kulturális évad első rendezvényeként a budapesti Iparművészeti Múzeum a római Musei Capitolini termeiben a 19. század végének új művészeti ízlését, az art nouveau-t, a liberty style-t vagy ahogy Németországban nevezik, a Jugendstil-t állította a figyelem középpontjába.

In spring 2013, the first event of the Hungarian cultural season in Italy was an exhibition by the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts focusing on the new artistic style of the late nineteenth century, art nouveau, also known as Stile Liberty in Italy and Jugendstil in Germany.

Esterházy-kincsek. Öt évszázad műalkotásai a hercegi gyűjteményekből / Hungary's Heritage. Princely Treasures from the Esterházy Collection / Die Esterházy-Schatzkammer.

Gifts of dazzling gold cups from the powerful rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, bejewelled Turkish daggers, richly enamelled tankards and elegant love tokens - the Esterházy treasury.

Bringológia - Amikor a dizájn hajtja a kerékpárt / Bikeology - When design drives the bike

The exhibition pushes the boundaries of the interpretation of design as a discipline and a profession: in addition to new formal developments, visitors may learn about concepts shaping the system, social projects, and innovative technologies. The historical context and the significance of the exhibition are highlighted by some exceptional and accentuated pieces from the collection of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.

Magyar reneszánsz és barokk hímzések - Vászonalapú úrihímzések / Hungarian Renaissance and Baroque Embroideries - Aristocratic Embroideries on Linen

A szakkatalógus a magyar reneszánsz és barokk hímzések közül a legjellemzőbb hazai stílust képviselő vászonalapú úrihímzéseket tárgyalja. Ezeknek a 16-18. században színes selyem-, arany- és ezüst fonallal készült hímzéseknek a mintakincse az európai és magyar reneszánsz hagyományokból és a másfél évszázados török megszállás során megismert keleti motívumokból ötvöződött jellegzetes magyar stílussá.

The second specialist catalogue introducing the collections held by Budapest's Museum of Applied Arts discusses those aristocratic embroideries representing the most characteristically Hungarian examples of Hungarian Renaissance and Baroque work in this genre.

Oszmán-török szőnyegek / Ottoman Turkish Carpets

Az Iparművészeti Múzeum gazdag anyagában is kiemelkedő jelentőségű a szőnyeggyűjtemény. Kialakulását nem utolsósorban a magyar lakáskultúra sajátos fejlődése tette lehetővé. A régi magyar otthonok elmaradhatatlan dísze volta keleti szőnyeg.
